Cultural psychiatry is concerned with understanding the impact of social and cultural differences and similarities on mental illness and its treatments. A person’s cultural characteristics can often lead to misunderstandings, influenced by language, non-verbal styles, codes of etiquette and assumptions. There may also be perceived misconceptions and differences in beliefs and values. In order to provide appropriate, sensitive and acceptable services for different cultural groups, all service providers need to take these factors into account. Written by leading clinicians and academics from around the world, and integrating both practical and theoretical knowledge, the Textbook of Cultural Psychiatry provides a framework for the provision of mental healthcare in a multi-cultural/ multi-racial society and global economy. It will be essential reading for those providing mental healthcare, or who are involved in the organisation and management of services.

No.2 Thought Suppression (BRAT Series in Clinical Psychology)
Product Details
»Book Publisher: Elsevier Science (28 November, 2005)
»ISBN: 0080447147
»Book author: Eric Rassin
Is it possible to ban unwanted thoughts from consciousness? According to the literature on thought suppression, the answer is no. In the 1980s, Wegner and colleges demonstrated that the average person cannot prevent a trivial thought like that of a polar bear from entering consciousness approximately seven times in a five minute period. This experimental finding was followed by a substantial number of replications. This book provides an up-to-date overview of the thought suppression literature. First, similarities and differences between suppression, repression, and dissociation are discussed. Methodological issues are then considered. Finally, the clinical applications of the thought suppression literature are discussed. Although there are numerous conditions to which the phenomenon of suppression can be applied, obsession and traumatic recollection are the main applications. In addition to offering an overview of the literature, this book links the thought suppression paradigm to other research fields, such as directed forgetting and repressive coping. Furthermore, it discusses the phenomenon of thought suppression in the light of broader theories such as the cognitive theory of obsession, and the ego depletion hypothesis. Clinical implications and directions for future research are offered.

No3. Lifespan Development of Human Memory
Product Details
»Book Publisher: The MIT Press (16 September, 2002)
»ISBN: 026207236X
»Book author: Peter Graf, Nobuo Ohta
Until recently, the vast majority of memory research used only university students and other young adults as subjects. Although such research successfully introduced new methodologies and theoretical concepts, it created a bias in our understanding of the lifespan development of memory. This book signals a departure from young-adult-centered research. It views the lifespan development of memory as a continuous process of growth and loss, where each phase of development raises unique questions favoring distinct research methods and theoretical approaches. Drawing on a broad range of investigative strategies, the book lays the foundation for a comprehensive understanding of the lifespan development of human memory.
Topics include the childhood and adulthood development of working memory, episodic and autobiographical memory, and prospective memory, as well as the breakdown of memory functions in Alzheimer’s disease. Of particular interest is the rich diversity of approaches, methods, and theories. The book takes an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on work from psychology, psychiatry, gerontology, and biochemistry

No.7 Natural Treatments for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Product Details
»Book Publisher: Praeger Publishers (30 November, 2007)
»ISBN: 0275993744
»Book author: Daivati Bharadvaj
CFS starts as a persistent fatigue that lasts six months or more. Physical and mental activity may worsen the condition, and sleep does not produce any new energy. Originally dubbed “The Yuppie Flu” in the 1970s, it is accompanied by four or more other maladies–short-term memory loss or inability to concentrate, sore throat, muscle pain, joint pain, and/or tender lymph nodes. “It is a therapeutic challenge,” says Naturopath Bharadvaj. But this author explains naturopathic approaches that are proving effective in the treatment of CFS, either alone or in concert with Western medicines. The reader is guided to a comprehensive understanding of this condition from its controversial history to its growing acceptance and evolving definition. Written from a foundation of scientific research, the book elaborates current theories of the cause of CFS, discusses how the disorder can display in different people, and presents alternative diagnostic methods. Naturopathic medicine, homeopathy, Ayurveda, acupuncture, clinical nutrition, and botanical medicines for CFS are all explained in this excellent resource.

Thus, this book combines the latest scholarly research in the history of medicine and psychiatry with the vast scientific research literature on the diagnosis, etiology, pathophysiology, course, outcome, and treatment of schizophrenia. Bipolar depression is now known to exist as a spectrum of disorders rather than a single disease entity. Bipolar II Disorder exists on this spectrum as a condition where the depressive episodes are as severe as in Bipolar I Disorder, but where the mood elevation states are not as extreme. This unexpected combination can lead to a failure to detect a condition thought to affect up to 6% of the population. This book reviews, for the first time, our knowledge of this debilitating disorder, covering its history, classification and neurobiology. In a unique section, fourteen internationally recognized experts debate management strategies, building to some consensus, and resulting in treatment guidelines where no such advice currently exists. It should be read by all health professionals managing mood disorders and will be informative to those wishing to learn more about the condition.

This book sees Freud as one of the last great exponents of Enlightenment rationalism; yet he also forms part of modernism—which shattered traditional forms in art—and he leads forward to certain postmodern ideas. The book examines some of Freud's themes that remain challenging and relevant today—for example, psychoanalysis as a form of narrative-construction, the creative nature of memory, the revolutionary nature of the knowledge gained through psychotherapy, and unconscious, which subverts any notion of stable human identity.

Publication Date: 2008-05-16
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1588299171

Binding: Hardcover
Psychiatry has emerged as a burgeoning scientific field with major advances in etiology and treatment of several disorders. Just as there was excitement in the anatomic advances that took place a hundred years ago when Emil Kraepelin and his collaborators took on the enormous task of classification of psychiatric disorders based on rational scientific thinking, new advances in genetics, biochemistry, neuroanatomy and pharmacotherapy of mental disorders have brought us even closer to a better understanding of complex disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and even autism. The major goal of the previous edition of this classic book was to update the busy clinician, psychiatric resident and medical student with the most up-to-date information on etiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. This goal remains the focus of the third edition of this book. In this updated and expanded edition, the reader is provided with the most contemporary information and literature supported by a close survey of the field. Several new chapters dealing with new concepts in biology and treatment of mental disorders have been added. This new edition of this classic title, with its focus on biologic and medical aspects of psychiatry, will continue to be of significant help to all interested in the scientific practice of psychiatry.
